Most post-cementation pain cases are not material failures.
They are occlusal verification failures.

Here are the 3 occlusal adjustment mistakes students repeat without realising:
▶️ First, checking occlusion in a wet field.
Saliva smears articulating paper marks and creates false contacts.
You end up adjusting areas that were never the first contact.
▶️ Second, using thick articulating paper.
Thick paper shows contact presence, not contact timing.
It exaggerates contact areas and pushes you toward over-adjustment.
▶️ Third, ignoring the location of occlusal marks.
Contacts on marginal ridges and inclined planes are not harmless.
They create lateral forces, discomfort, and long-term failure.
Occlusal verification is biomechanics. Not guesswork.
💡 Occlusal adjustment steps, articulating paper selection, and interpretation of centric contacts are frequently tested in prosthodontics exams.

I used to grind every red mark I saw. My crowns paid the price.

Most students think articulating paper is just about spotting contacts.
That’s where the damage begins (by grinding cusps blindly)
Red marks are not your enemy. Misreading them is.
▶️ Blue markings record centric contacts.
They show where vertical load is being accepted.
▶️ Red markings record excursive contacts.
They only make sense after centric stability is confirmed.
▶️ When you grind red marks before stabilising blue, you erase centric stops.
That converts vertical forces into lateral ones.
And that is how a perfectly designed crown starts chipping.
▶️ My verification rule is simple.
Blue always comes first.
Red is never read in isolation.
And no adjustment is done without knowing the role of that tooth in occlusion.
💡 Blue vs red interpretation is a silent favourite as an applied occlusion question in exams.

CROWN PREP - “WHAT BURS DO YOU USE...?”
1200+ dental multiple choice questions with full explanations, must have dental accessories link in bio👆
In our student clinics, we prefer a modified, internally rounded shoulder for CAD/CAM crowns. This helps with proper reduction to create space for the ceramic and a clear finish line. Shoulder needs to be rounded for proper fit of the milled restoration. Chamfer preps are fine too, but one has to careful not to prep past the tip of the chamfer diamond to not create a “lip” or “bathtub”, which has to be corrected with an end-cutting bur, hatchet, order similar...
Note that these are SUGGESTIONS based on what WE prefer and OUR experience. Find what YOU are most comfortable with to achieve your goals!
Note that we do not endorse a specific product/brand - other manufacturers may have similar burs and kits.
KUDOS to photographer and dentist PACO ROJAS drpacorojas for the great photos of the burs!

By • profmarkusblatz “WHY SHOULD I ROUND and SMOOTHEN my PREPARATION for anterior milled CAD/CAM ceramic crowns...?”
Well, sufficient ceramic THICKNESS is especially needed in the incisal third for ESTHETICS (translucent incisal edge) and ceramic STRENGTH.
PLUS: the milling bur may NOT be able to mill very sharp corners (dependent on milling bur size and sharpness), which will lead to “overmilling”, VOIDS, and compromised adaption/fit (and possibly areas in the ceramic that are TOO THIN). This thin areas may allow
Tooth/cement to “shimmer through” and/or compromise strength.
And remember: Every SHARP CORNER in a ceramic restoration may function as a CRACK INITIATOR! Avoid them!!!
HAPPY PREPPING!!!!😁😊
