How to reduce AXIAL DEPTH 🔍
🦷 In simple terms:
Axial depth = how deep you go into the tooth toward the pulp along the internal wall that follows the tooth’s contour.
📍 For example:
• In a Class II cavity, the axial wall is the inner wall facing the pulp.
• The axial depth is the distance from the proximal surface of the tooth to that axial wall.
📏 Typical axial depths:
• Class II cavity: about 1–1.5 mm
• Class III cavity: about 0.75–1 mm
• Class V cavity: about 0.5–0.75 mm
(It varies slightly based on caries extent and tooth structure.)
🧠 Purpose of maintaining correct axial depth:
• To remove caries effectively without overcutting
• To preserve pulp vitality
• To ensure adequate retention and resistance form
• To allow a uniform thickness of restorative material
